2010 Election Update

Note from Julie Kay, president of the South Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists:

It is my duty to inform you that the national Society of Professional Journalists is looking into potential issues that may have occurred with the Nov. 19 election of the local SPJ chapter.

Here is the communication we received Friday from Kevin Smith, SPJ National President:

Members of the South Florida Pro Chapter:
I’ve received three emails raising questions about the validity of this election and I’ve now heard counter-arguments. I am the president, not a judge, so at this point I will inform all of you that I will confer with national headquarters staff on Monday about this matter and we will consider how to proceed. We will explore this situation thoroughly.

There is precedence for national involvement in chapter affairs and elections if it is warranted. Please be patient.

I admire everyone’s passion for SPJ and the welfare of one of our most prized chapters.

Kevin Z. Smith
National President

We and the national organization have received numerous letters of complaint from members concerned about whether our bylaws were properly followed and whether a fair and open election was held. They also requested the national review.

We will keep you, our members, apprised of any developments as they arise. Feel free to contact me if you have questions at 954-303-3384 or jkay50@hotmail.com.

Sincerely,

Julie Kay
