College Scholarships

We get it, paying for college can be hard. We’re here to help.

Every summer, SPJ Florida accepts applications for two scholarships just for Florida college journalists. Students are free to apply to both, but can only win one. Scholarships will be used for the Fall 2021 semester.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, July 20, 2022. Winners will be announced by Monday, Aug. 1, 2022.

General Journalism Scholarship

If you see journalism in your future, this is the scholarship for you. We award $2,500 for a student who is working to become a professional journalist, because we want students to be able to focus on their classes and reporting the news instead of worrying how they’ll pay for school. Whether your see yourself working in newspapers, magazines, photography, broadcast, radio or digital, this scholarship is open to Florida college students.

Molly Turner Broadcast Scholarship

While women dominate journalism classrooms in colleges, they only make up 44% of news staffers in radio and TV stations. They’re also more likely to work in the smallest markets.

SPJ Florida wants to encourage women to pursue their goals of becoming broadcast journalists with this $1,000 scholarship, named in honor of the late Molly Turner. Known as the “first lady of South Florida news,” she was the former WPLG-Ch. 10 Miami news personality, making her the first female reporter and anchor in South Florida. This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of the Turner family.

NLGJA South Florida Scholarship Award

SPJ Florida is pleased to provide web space for our friends at NLGJA South Florida for its inaugural college scholarship.

The scholarship award for the 2022-2023 academic year will provide $500 in tuition funding to an LGBTQ student who plans a career in journalism and is committed to furthering NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists’ mission of fair and accurate coverage of the LGBTQ community.
