Coming soon: a webinar on unionizing your newsroom
SPJ Florida and The NewsGuild are proud to present a free webinar for newsroom employees who are considering unionizing but don’t know where to start.
The March 12 webinar will feature newsroom guild members from Florida publications as well as journalists from The L.A. Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Daily Hampshire-Gazette. We’ll discuss what it was like for these journalists to lead, organize or participate in union efforts, the protections it’s provided their newsroom, navigating relationships with newsroom management and more. There will also be a Q&A period.
As the event gets closer, a link to join the webinar will be published on our Facebook event page.
For privacy concerns, we encourage participants to keep their identity concealed during this webinar. We’ll make sure participants’ names are hidden and the only people on camera will be the panelists and moderator, not attendees — but going the extra mile by joining via an account not linked to your name is recommended.
WHY ANONYMOUS?
We realize that employees attending this webinar may not be in a union-protected newsroom. We don’t want to risk outing a potential union effort. In addition, we realize it’s entirely possible that newsroom managers could tune into this webinar or watch it after-the-fact when we publish it on our YouTube channel. We want to ensure participants feel safe to ask questions without worrying about who’s watching.
PANELISTS:
* Kristina Bui – L.A. Times Guild

This program was funded by SPJ national through its quarterly chapter grant initiative.
