Early Birds Can Save on Florida ACES event

The annual Florida ACES workshop will be held on June 22 in St. Petersburg.  Early bird prices for those with registration postmarked by June 1 are just $8 for ACES and SND members and students; $23 for all others.

The event is for copy editors working in any media, from students through old hands.

Topics and speakers will include:

Alternative story forms, presented by Sara Quinn of the visual journalism faculty at The Poynter Institute.
Ethics in the online world, Jan Leach, professor of journalism at Kent State University in Ohio.
ŒSo This is Journalism?‚ session on online editing, Anne Glover, AME for online  features at the St. Petersburg Times.
What copy editors need to know about journalism and the law, Rick Kenney, assistant professor of  journalism at the University of Central Florida.
Editing when you don’t have time, John Schlander, executive news editor, St. Petersburg Times.
Writing effective headlines, Jeff Rubin, copy desk chief of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
Careers outside the copy desk, a panel featuring Leigh Caldwell, SNN News 6 executive producer; Patty Kim, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, media relations coordinator; Anne Glover, St. Petersburg Times.

How copy editors can take charge of a paper’s critique, Jeff Rubin, Sarasota  Herald-Tribune.
ACES and the state of copy editing, Chris Wienandt, ACES president and Dallas Morning News.

Workshops will be at The Poynter Institute, 801 S. Third St., St. Petersburg. Lunch will be provided.

Florida ACES is a chapter of the American Copy Editors Society, which aims to improve the quality of journalism and the working lives of journalists.
