Fellowship Available for Environmental Studies
Working journalists can apply for a fellowship to attend the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment May 12-17 at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter.
You can study environmental issues in the context of South Florida, a subtropical world facing many of the same pressures found elsewhere in the U.S. – over-development, dwindling water, wetland losses, pollution, invasive exotic species and imperiled animals and wildlife habitat. Talk to scientists and environmental legal eagles, water managers and veteran journalists who can help you make better sense of today’s pressing ecological issues while you travel across a large slice of this peninsular to see their impacts firsthand.
Florida Atlantic University is accepting applications for its third annual environmental journalism training institute in Jupiter, Florida. The six-day Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment – which runs from May 12 to 17 in 2008 — is open to full-time print, broadcast and electronic journalists. The institute enrolls up to 25 participants in a competitive selection process.
The program is headquartered at FAU’s Honors College campus, located 20 minutes north of West Palm Beach and within reach of the Atlantic coast and the region’s signature Everglades and Indian River Lagoon ecosystems. Environmental studies will occur on campus and on the road via daily field trips to natural areas, research stations and environmental hot spots.
Journalists will hear top environmental experts talk about environmental issues that both affect and transcend South Florida. The goal is to provide insights that are relevant and useful to journalists working in other states and regions.
The draft 2008 agenda spans a variety of issues, including: climate change, hurricane research, bio-fuels, wind-farming, nutrient pollution, agriculture, water transfers, loopholes in conservation land protections, invasive exotic species and environmental law. In their travels, participants may trek from Fort Pierce to Miami to examine issues affecting the Everglades, Indian River Lagoon, Atlantic Coast, Loxahatchee River, Everglades Agricultural Area and important local upland preserves.
The Monday-Saturday program is sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation. It is coordinated by FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies and Florida Center for Environmental Studies. The fellowship covers instruction, lodging, meals and field trip travel. Participants must pay their own way to FAU to attend the program.
