Food For The Poor, Inc. (Full Time)

Food For The Poor is seeking an organized, detail-oriented copy editor to join its Creative Services Department. The copy editor will join an award-winning team that produces a variety of communications to publicize Food For The Poor’s work and impact on the people of the countries it serves in the Caribbean and Latin America. The copy editor will support the managing editor and the division’s editorial staff to produce quality, compelling, on-brand fundraising copy across multiple channels. The copy editor will substantively edit, proofread and check facts for print and electronic communications projects for timely dissemination. The copy editor will use editorial skill, judgment and knowledge of our organization’s values and mission to ensure accurate and compelling content, and consistent use of grammar, style and voice in keeping with fundraising best practices.

Overall Responsibilities:

•Participate in concept development and brainstorming for fundraising campaigns that align with overall organizational brand
•Edits writers’ drafts for style, accuracy, clarity, grammar and fundraising effectiveness
•Must have a keen eye for detail, but also be able to see the “big picture” in optimizing fundraising and storytelling communications
•Reviews content, fact-checks information and is able to rewrite copy as needed
•Ensures the quality and accuracy of projects and communications passing through the department
•Collaborates with staff writers, fellow editors, internal clients and others involved in editorial process
•Creates Laser Copy for the use of Mail Services and third-party vendors
•Responsible for substantial and conceptual editing of the organization’s Project Department Projects Reports, Gifts in Kind Department Donor Reports, Public Relations Department Press Releases, and Donor Relations Department Flyers


•Excellent grammar skills
•Ability to recognize and fix grammar, punctuation and spelling errors
•Strong writing skills
•Highly organized with compulsive attention to detail
•Demonstrated experience utilizing brand guidelines in writing projects
•Familiarity with interdenominational Christian beliefs/doctrines and ability to effectively integrate them in messaging
•Ability to evaluate, interpret and edit copy in a donor-friendly and donor-centric manner
•Knowledge of best practices in direct-response nonprofit fundraising communications
•Keen eye for the essentials of good fundraising copy
•Self-motivated to work independently and as part of a team, with a team-player attitude
•Ability to manage several competing priorities simultaneously while meeting deadlines
•Ability to work well under pressure
•Demonstrated knowledge of AP style a plus
•Good command of Microsoft Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) necessary
•Spanish language skills a plus
•Agency or in-house creative department experience a plus

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or a relevant field, or relevant work experience

Minimum of five years’ experience in editing fundraising or direct response marketing copy, preferably in a non-profit environment
