Times/Herald Tallahassee reporter

Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald (Full Time)

The Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald Tallahassee bureau is looking for someone who can make sense of one of the most frenetic state capitols in the nation as it enters a new era. Next year, voters will choose a U.S. Senator, governor, all three members of the Florida Cabinet, 27 members of Congress, half of the state Senate and the entire 120-member House of Representatives. Although considered a swing state in presidential elections, Republicans have dominated state elections for 20 years. We’re looking for someone who can write explanatory and investigative stories illustrating the track record of Florida’s government in a way that can drive policy discussion and shape the upcoming political season.

Qualifications

The right candidate for this job is someone who not only has a passion for accountability stories, but who has proven the ability to consistently deliver them. This person should strive to hold agencies and systems, not just people, responsible. Their reporting should objectively measure performance by emphasizing larger patterns, not random anecdotes.

A mastery of basics is essential: clear thinking and clear writing; strong reporting skills, from mining public documents to working sources in a competitive hothouse environment; and a passion for policy as well as politics. Data skills are desired, but not required.

This person must be proficient on social media and willing to work on multiple digital platforms. In today’s web-first environment, Tallahassee’s stories belong to those who own them online.

This is not an entry-level position. A minimum of five years’ experience is required.

Teamwork is vital to the success of the Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau. The Times’ partnership with the Miami Herald makes us the premier political reporting team in the state. The job demands collegiality and collaboration, a willingness to try different approaches to storytelling, and a courage to pursue a story, no matter the blowback.
