Upcoming Event: Minorities in the Media – Why Do They Keep Getting it Wrong?

A panel of South Florida media professionals will convene 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 to discuss how minorities are positively and negatively portrayed in the media. The event will take place at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale

The seminar is a part of the AARLC’s fall lecture series “Engaged Voters: Making Sure Your Vote Counts.”

The panel will include:

  • Robert Beatty – publisher of the South Florida Times, one of the largest African-American and Caribbean newspapers in Florida.
  • Sergio Bustos – the state/politics editor for the Miami Herald, and oversees the Herald’s cover-age of Florida and politics.
  • Winston F. Barnes – news director for WAVS Radio, Davie/Fort Lauderdale, since 1989. He edits and presents newscasts in drive time A.M. programs, and produces editorials and commentaries on topical issues three times per week.
  • Neil Reisner, M.S. – an associate professor at Florida International University. He was a daily newspaper reporter/editor for 25 years.
