South Florida wins big in Region 3 Mark of Excellence awards

Students from three SoFla. schools snatched 13 MOEs

Three universities in South Florida have won major awards in this year’s Mark of Excellence competition. Entrants came from all over SPJ’s region 3, including Florida, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. The honorees were awarded certificates on March 24 during the Spring Conference at the University of Florida in Gainesville. First-place regional winners will advance to the national round of judging. National winners will be announced in late April.

There were 97 total winners, 13 of which hail from Palm Beach State College, Florida Atlantic University and University of Florida. To check out these student publications go to The Beachcomber (PBSC), The University Press (FAU) and The Miami Hurricane (UM).

Palm Beach State College — Beachcomber

  • 1st Place, General News Reporting-2 Year/Community College: Erin Hayes
  • 1st Place, Sports Writing-2 Year/Community College: Pedro Heizer
  • 2nd Place, Sports Writing-2 Year/Community College: Tracy Harris


Florida Atlantic University — University Press

  • 1st Place, General News Reporting-4 Year College/University: Ryan Cortes and Christopher Persaud
  • 2nd Place, General News Reporting-4 Year College/University: University Press staff
  • 3rd Place, Sports Column Writing-4 Year College/University: Ryan Cortes


University of Miami — Miami Hurricane

  • 2nd Place, Television Feature Photography: Drew Appolonia
  • 2nd Place, Best All-Around Television Newscast: UMTV staff
  • 2nd Place, Photo Illustration-4 Year College/University: Marlena Skrobe
