SPJ Florida Adds Spanish Language Categories to Annual Awards
SPJ Florida is pleased to announce the addition of seven Spanish language categories to this year’s Sunshine State Awards. To make this happen SPJ Florida partnered with the South Florida Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with SPJ to offer Spanish-language categories in this year’s Sunshine Awards for the first tim,” said Pia Malbran, president of the NAHJ South Florida Chapter. “Spanish-language media plays a critical role in the news industry and we want to make sure the good work is being honored and recognized.”
The categories include:
- Journalist of the Year
- Best Investigative Report, News
- Best Breaking News Coverage, Press
- Best Special Feature, News
- Best Investigative Report on Television
- Best Investigative Report on Television
- Best News of the Day Television
- Best Television Feature
This isn’t the first time the two organizations have partnered up. Last year SPJ Florida and NAHJ teamed up to host a two-day conference, Forging the Future, in Miami. More than 200 people attended the event and both organizations hailed it as a success. The Sunshine State Awards ceremony took place after lunch and the event was named by BizBash as one of South Florida’s Top 100 events in 2013.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with NAHJ again,” said Jason Parsley, president of SPJ Florida. “One of SPJ’s core missions is to promote and encourage diversity in journalism so adding Spanish language categories is a natural evolution of our awards contest. It’s important to showcase the diversity of not only journalists but media outlets as well.”
The early bird price is $28 per entry and is good until February 21. After that the price goes to $33. The final deadline is February 28. SPJ and NAHJ members receive their second entry free.
