SPJ Florida Awarded Runner Up for Large Chapter of the Year

SPJ Florida was awarded runner up for Large Chapter of the Year by the national board.

Announced at the Excellence in Journalism conference in Baltimore, Maryland, the chapter was specifically recognized for its Femme Freelance Fest, Drone Tour, Fake News Game Show, and Abuse in the Newsroom panel.

Chapter President Christiana Lilly and Vice President Abbi Perry were present to accept the award.

“We are so proud for our chapter to be recognized for an incredible year of programming,” Lilly said. “While at EIJ, we were also able to get ideas from other chapters on what worked in their communities and how we can implement them in Florida.”

“This was my first EIJ conference and I enjoyed every minute of it. I love being part of an organization that develops and implements meaningful programs to educate journalists and non-journalists a like,” Perry said.

SPJ San Diego took the top spot as Large Chapter of the Year. Fellow Region 3 chapter, SPJ Georgia, was nominated for Small Chapter of the Year.

SPJ Florida has won first place for Large Chapter of the Year four times in the last 10 years—2010, 2013, 2016 and 2017. It has also won numberous Circle of Excellence Awards, in communication, diversity, campus relations, and scholarship.
