SPJ Presents “Launching Your Own News Organization”
Launching Your Own News Organization:
How to Fund, Start and Successfully Operate It
Thursday, October 29 – 7:00 p.m.
Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center
1301 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL
All over the country, as the metros bleed circulation and lay off talented journalists, those journos are opting to stay in journalism by starting their own news sites, whether they be online or print. The most successful one so far is the Voice of San Diego, but we have several popping up in our backyard. Hear some veteran journalists talk about how they have become publishers — and obtained that critical start-up funding — and what advice the Knight Foundation has to offer about how to get a piece of its grants.
The discussion will be moderated by SPJ South Florida President Julie Kay. Panelists include:
- Carol Gentry – Health News Florida
- Dan Christensen – Broward Bulldog
- Jerry Lower – The Coastal Star
- Gary Kebbel – Knight Foundation
This event is presented free of charge by SPJ South Florida Pro Chapter and is open to all. Free parking is available in the Community Center’s lot. Driving directions from I-95 to the Center are here.
No formal RSVP is required and walk-ins are welcome, but please do send us an e-mail if you plan to attend, so we can set the room appropriately.
