SPJ South Florida Pro Michael McQueen Memorial Journalism Training Grant

For working professional journalists in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties. This grant honors Michael McQueen (1957-2009): former chapter president, newspaper reporter, editor, Associated Press bureau chief and educator.

The South Florida Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is seeking applicants to receive a $500 grant to be used for professional journalism training.  The winning applicant may use the grant to pay for training-related expenses, such as registration fees, travel expenses and/or tuition.  Possible uses include graduate-level coursework in journalism, training programs offered by specialized providers, such as the Poynter Institute, or seminars produced by journalism associations (SPJ, IRE, RTNDF, etc.) and should be used within one calendar year of receiving the grant.

The winner will be announced at the annual Sunshine State Awards ceremony in June 2012.

Application Deadline:  June 1, 2012.

To apply for this grant, please download and fill out our 2012 grant application and e-mail it to Scholarship Chair Bill Whiting.

Also, please attach the following:

  1. A brief essay:  Tell us why you should receive the grant and how you would use it to improve yourself as a journalist.
  2. A letter from your supervisor, indicating their willingness to allow you to participate in an appropriate training program if you receive the grant.
