Sunshine State Awards Expand Student Division

Sunshine-State-Awards-BlueSPJ Florida is pleased to announce the expansion of its college division of its Sunshine State Awards. Now entering its 20th year the annual awards contest is the largest statewide contest for journalists.

For many years the contest only had one category for students — college journalist of the year. In 2011 SPJ Florida partnered with the Florida College Press Association to expand the contest and assist in managing it.

This year SPJ Florida takes over the contest entirely, revamping the categories in the process. In addition all the proceeds from the student portion of this year’s competition will go to support SPJ Florida’s annual student program — Will Write For Food.

“We’re excited to be managing the contest this year. Being a previous SPJ Florida college journalist of the year winner I know how meaningful these awards can be, especially to college students just beginning their careers,” said SPJ Florida President Jason Parsley. “Entering and winning show that these students are dedicated to their craft and they care about their work. It also shows they are producing some good journalism and doing more than just attending class while in school.”
