Sunshine State Awards Expands to Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands

Sunshine-State-Awards-BlueSPJ Florida is pleased to announce that journalists in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will now be eligible to enter its annual Sunshine State Awards competition.

“For too long Puerto Rico and USVI have been left out of a local SPJ awards contest and so we’re excited to add both of them to ours this year,” said Jason Parsley, president of SPJ Florida.

The early bird deadline is February 21 with the final deadline being February 28.

“Most people might not associate USVI with journalism, but the island has a history producing damn good work,” Parsley said. “In fact in 1995 the The Virgin Islands Daily News became the third smallest newspaper in the country to win the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.”

This year SPJ Florida also partnered with the South Florida Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists to add Spanish language categories to its lineup.

“With SPJ Florida including Spanish language categories this year it only makes sense for us to include the Puerto Rican media market,” Parsley said.

The early bird price is $28 per entry. After that the price goes to $33. SPJ and NAHJ members receive their second entry free.
